West Java Provincial Government Partners With Danone-AQUA to Install #BijakBerplastik Infiltration Wells Through the HANSIP-CA Program

Published on 4 January 2022

The West Java Provincial Government and Danone-AQUA inaugurated their collaboration to install infiltration wells through the Hold and Save as Water Reserve (HANSIP-CA) program on Tuesday (30/11) at the former Employment, Education and Training Agency (BKPP) Bogor Office in West Java. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil, representatives from the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), and the head of the West Java Province Water Resources Agency.

West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil said, "I hope Danone-AQUA will continue to be a leader in saving the environment and in campaigning for #BijakBerplastic infiltration wells. This could provide a solution for potential flooding, as damage from rising water might be mitigated by the presence of infiltration wells."

This collaboration illustrates Danone-AQUA's commitment to protect water resources, bolstered by the implementation of a circular economy in Indonesia. The installation of the #BijakBerplastic infiltration wells in West Java is a measure to prevent water run-off and flooding, and function as a groundwater reserve. In addition, the construction of #BijakBerplastik infiltration wells utilizes otherwise useless plastic waste. Many types of plastic with low or no economic value, such as black plastic bags, multilayer plastic packaging, diapers, and aluminum foil are put to good use by processing them into something of value, and by bringing economic value to the surrounding community.

Danone Indonesia Director of Sustainable Development Karyanto Wibowo explained, “In line with the shared vision of maintaining sustainable water resources, we are committed to supporting the West Java Provincial Government’s installation of infiltration wells at several flood points. This commitment will be realized in several phases. During this initial stage, we will provide 20 #BijakBerplastik infiltration wells, an innovation by Danone Indonesia and the Bogor Agricultural Institute. Made from 150 kg of non-commercial plastic waste, these wells are capable of absorbing 16,000 liters of water. This innovative collaboration is expected to be one of many solution options and answer several challenges at once, namely the issue of non-recyclable plastic waste, accommodating groundwater reserves, and reducing flood risk.”

#BijakBerplastik infiltration wells have advantages over conventional infiltration wells. The knock down shape makes installation more practical and facilitates the mobilization process. Additionally, the construction is strong and durable. This well is able to absorb more water. The process of making this infiltration well has also been developed and tested for its physical strength and integrity. The microplastics and materials have been analyzed by a certified laboratory to verify that there will be no negative impact on the environment or the absorbed water.

Danone-AQUA has continued its commitment in Indonesia as a pioneer, in full support of the conversion of plastic packaging waste since 2018, through the #BijakBerplastik movement. These efforts are realized through three important commitments: collection of more plastic packaging than is produced, education of 100 million consumers, and development of plastic packaging innovations to achieve 100 percent packaging that can be recycled, reused or composted by 2025.

Danone-AQUA Sustainability Report 2019-2020 Awarded ASRRAT 2021 Gold Category

Published on 4 January 2022

Danone-AQUA's 2019-2020 Sustainability Report won the gold category rating from the 2021 Asia Sustainability Reporting Rating (ASRRAT), which was held on November 17, 2021, in Jakarta. The report, which was compiled using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standard framework, collected Danone-AQUA's efforts in nature conservation, community and internal empowerment, as well as the involvement of various sectors in support of the government’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Indonesia.

National Center for Sustainability Reporting Chairman Dr. Ali Darwin appreciated the reporting and performance of companies participating in ASRRAT 2021. “Sustainability requires innovation and collaboration from various stakeholders, and these actions need to be disclosed in a sustainability report. We appreciate companies that have made efforts to continue to uphold transparency through the preparation of sustainability reports and encourage improvements in both quantity and quality of reports,” he said.

In the sustainability report entitled “Maintaining Good for a Sustainable Indonesia”, Danone-AQUA reaffirms its commitment to implementing sustainable business practices and Good Corporate Governance by providing transparency in every aspect of its operations. Through this sustainability report, Danone-AQUA describes its vision, strategy, and achievement of its sustainability performance for the last two years.

Danone Indonesia VP General Secretary Vera Galuh Sugijanto explained, “Danone-AQUA always strives to build a balanced, profitable, and sustainable business growth model to create long-term value for stakeholders. In line with Danone's global vision, One Planet One Health, we are committed to ongoing development of various sustainability initiatives to achieve the Government of Indonesia's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this sustainability report launch, we hope to provide transparent information to stakeholders about the extent to which these sustainability initiatives have been achieved and their impact throughout our business chain.”

Previously, the Indonesian government had integrated 17 major goals and 169 targets from the SDGs agenda into the National Medium-Term Development Plan for 2020-2024. This demonstrates that the SDGs agenda is not just a global commitment, but also a guide for Indonesia to implement an inclusive and sustainable national development program. Realizing the importance of the company's role in this regard, Danone-AQUA is developing various initiatives that address natural sustainability by maintaining circularity in three areas, namely water, energy, and packaging. Danone-AQUA actively campaigns for healthy lifestyles, building business models that empower communities, building an inclusive work climate, and empowering employees.

The Danone-AQUA 2019-2020 sustainability report manifests the company's commitment to doing business while integrating wellness and good faith - be it for business progress, improving community welfare, or creating a sustainable environment.

"We thank all of the partners who have worked together to enact wide-ranging sustainability programs, the people of Indonesia, and of course the consumers who are involved in realizing a sustainable Indonesia," concluded Vera.
