Smart Drop Box, Unilever Indonesia’s Digital Innovation in Plastic Waste Collection

Published on 15 February 2022

PT Unilever Indonesia, Tbk. together with PT Supra Boga Lestari, Tbk. – which houses Ranch Market, The Gourmet, Farmers Market, Farmers Family, and Day2Day – and SMASH.id officially launched the Smart Dropbox Facilities on January 28, 2022, which are available at 10 Farmers Market outlets to educate and invite as many consumers as possible to become part of a shared solution in implementing a circular economy. Today's launch was also attended by Ujang Solihin Sidik, S.Si., M.Sc., Head of Sub-Directorate of Producer Management, Directorate of Waste Reduction.

In line with the strategy of 'The Unilever Compass', one of the pillars of which is Building a More Sustainable Planet, Unilever believes that plastic waste has its own place in the economic chain, but not in our environment. Globally, by 2025 Unilever has targets to: (1) Halve the use of new plastics; (2) Designing 100% of our product plastic packaging to be recyclable, reusable or biodegradable; (3) Help collect and process more plastic packaging than is sold; and (4) Increase the use of recycled plastic content (PCR) in our packaging by at least 25%.

To achieve this, Unilever consistently carry out various efforts from upstream to downstream, including collaboration with PT Supra Boga Lestari, Tbk, and SMASH.id to bring digital-based innovations in the plastic waste collection process. This collaboration is based on the shared goal in promoting education about the importance of sorting waste to the consumers. Through the Smart Drop Box which was co-developed, Unilever wants to help consumers, the #GenerasiPilahPlastik, to better manage their waste.
