L’Oréal - UNESCO for Women in Science Award 2019, Exploring Scientific Innovations for Sustainable Development

One of EuroCham members, L’Oréal, a science-based company with the passion to support female scientists from around the world, has once again partnered with the National Indonesian Commission for UNESCO (KNIU) to hold the 16th L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science (FWIS) National fellowship in 26 November 2019.

Four Indonesia’s outstanding female scientists receive awards and support for their efforts in developing scientific innovations to achieve sustainable development, namely Dr. Sc. Widiastuti Karim, M.Si (Udayana University) Study for biological function of green fluorescent proteins (GFP) in corals; Dr. rer.nat.Ayu Savitri Nurinsiyah, M.IL., M.Sc (LIPI), A voyage to discover the perfect snail: Determining characteristics of antimicrobial peptides (AMP) from several land snail species in Java; Dr. Swasmi Purwajanti, M.Sc (BPPT) Development of multi-functional magnesium oxide-based super nanoadsorbent from bittern (saltworks by product) for an efficient water remediation; Dr. Eng. Osi Arutanti, M.Si (LIPI) Development of a Potential Fe2O3 Semiconductor for a Visible-light Active Photocatalyst Water Treatment.

Present at the awarding ceremony were Prof. Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro, S.E., M.U.P., Ph.D., Minister of Research, Technology and Head of National Research and Innovation Agency; Prof. Dr. Arief Rachman, Chairman of the National Indonesian Commission (KNIU) for UNESCO, Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture; and Umesh Phadke, President Director of L’Oréal Indonesia.

Held since 2004, L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science holds the mission to acknowledge, encourage and support women in science, aimed to further improve women’s excitement towards science. This program has provided fellowships for 57 Indonesian female scientists, five of which have been awarded internationally. The four outstanding female scientists will each receive a IDR 95 million grant from L'Oréal Indonesia to be used for their research.
