Consultation Meeting with Ministry of Industry on Import Provision for Iron and Steel

The European Business Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (EuroCham) met on 25 March 2019 with the DG for Metal, Machineries, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics, Mr. Harjanto, who was accompanied by Ms. Dini Hanggandari as the Director of Metal Industry. The purpose of the meeting is to propose simplification on import requirements of iron and steel made products required by European manufacturers in Indonesia. Currently under the Minister of Trade Regulation No. 110 of 2018 on Import Provisions for Iron or Steel, Alloy Steel, and its Derivatives, in conjunction with the Minister of Industry Regulation No. 1 of 2019 that regulates issuance of its technical recommendation, there is no longer an exemption provided for importation of less than 1 metric ton by manufacturers not related to the targeted iron and steel industry.

Narrowing the Skills Gap between Industry and Vocational Education

On 20 March 2019, British Embassy in collaboration with EuroCham, BritCham, and APII held a sharing session with the title “Narrowing the Skills Gap between Industry and Vocational Education”. The event aims to explore issues and opportunities of understanding the skills gap occurred and identify concrete actions that can be taken to co-design industry-based Vocational Education Training (VET) programmes. Took place in Westin Hotel, the event invited representative from Ministry of Manpower to speak in a moderated discussion by Mr. Manish Giswani from ACCA. Participants of this event came from businesses, and educational institutions.

It is hoped that other initiatives such as this event can be conducted in the future to raise awareness and provide more opportunities for collaboration between educational institutions with the industry players. This kind of dialogue is important to answer various challenges that were also identified at the discussion such as language barrier; coordination to match the supply and demand in various areas and sector of industries; roles of initiative from the industries in supporting the Government’s program, etc.
